Pioneer Trademark
The future of brandy dates back to 1890. The history of brandy in the USA is deep and rich, with the heritage of California Brandy dating back over a century.
Spanish missionaries planted grapes in 1769 for sacramental wine purposes, some of this was distilled. With the California Gold Rush in the mid-19’th Century, demand for strong drink exploded and California winemakers began to distill surplus wine in to brandy. The distillation of brandy in California was well established alongside wine by the 1850’s. The California Brandy Association was formed in the late 1800’s.
The first Branded California Grape Brandy was Buena Vista in 1857. John Wolf established his Pioneer trademark on May 10, 1890 (Courtesy of California State Archives).
